My work traces the intersections of voyeurism, violence, and mythology across media &amp; commercialized landscapes. I bring together ceramics, photographic materialities, and immersive installations to trace the ritualization of image-making as an embodied performance of collective mythologies and desires. BIOOlivia Mikolai Ridge (b. 1992) is a visual artist living and working in Milwaukee, WI. Ridge’s research-based practice involves explorations in collaboration, traditional printing methods, arts programming &amp; administration, teaching, and private investigation. She received a BFA in photography from Concordia University in Montréal and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is the recipient of the Weinstein Memorial Fellowship award and invited artist collaborating with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project University Without Walls degree students at Stateville Prison. In Casting Crime, I investigate the production of contemporary fictional crime television dramas in collaboration with aspiring actors that work as non-union background extras on NBC’s police procedural television show, Chicago PD. Together, we interpret the archetypes of cinematic crime genres and embody desires for representation, reimagining our roles in this city and proposing alternative stories for the screen. In an ongoing workshop and performance for the camera, I ask the actors to interpret this minimal set to explore the question, “who do you want to play?”. Through a process of exchange, dialogue, and community building, this collaboration activates the voices from the background to disrupt the power structures of the lens, bringing into focus the stories and desires of people that lend their labor to plotlines. Casting Crime aims to expose the fabrication of law-and-order ideologies and host a space for counter-narratives and dialogues around internalized systems of power and representation. &nbsp; <img Evan Lanese Sam Martinez Noelle Nicholson Olivia Mikolai Ridge Jessica Swan Richard Ward The Giant You Know is a collaborative photographic and sculptural installation that considers the giant as a figure of myth, memory, grief, and transformation. Nine artists created fragments of an imagined giant from locally foraged wild clay, pit-fired using a traditional open-air firing process. Scattered through an aspen grove in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, these fragments form an archaeological burial ground partially unearthed from the landscape. The giant is an inherently contradictory figure. Across mythologies, giants are protectors and monsters, creators and destroyers, ancestors and threats. They embody forces that exceed human comprehension. As we made the fragments, participants imagined giants as people we had loved, lost, feared, or carried with us.&nbsp; The project also draws from a personal and cultural history of the giant as an American icon. My mother and her four sisters worked as “pea shuckers” at the Jolly Green Giant factory in Blue Earth, Minnesota. This contemporary giant, standing 55 feet tall along I-90, recasts the ancient giant as a symbol of abundance and nourishment. The collision between ancient myth, family history, and collective memory is central to the work. Returned to the aspen grove, the giant's remains enter an ecosystem connected by a shared underground root system. The burial ground becomes a ritual space where myth, grief, collaboration, and landscape intersect. created during a six-month-long correspondence with Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project University Without Walls degree students and alumni at Stateville prison. Together, we considered the value and possibilities of photography as a tool of agency over one’s own image. In February 2022, PNAP staff member Jason LaFountain invited me to conduct a photography-based project with current and former UWW students. While I was a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I took Jason’s class, Visuality, Criminality, and the Counter-Image, where we studied how photography has served to uphold systems of oppression and criminalization. As a photographer, I am invested in creating the representations that people want of themselves. I was intrigued by the irony of this invitation: to create photographs, but photographs that would not include the students’ likenesses. No photography is allowed within the prison, and, as we were amid the COVID pandemic, I was not able to visit the students at Stateville. As a result, we utilized photography to reflect on the disconnection between the inside and outside worlds, and the removal of people from communities, which is both the ends and means of mass incarceration. Our correspondence began with me asking the students their feelings about their State ID photos. As the only photograph I had access to, and the most recent photo of some students, their unanimous disdain for their State IDs helped give me a sense of the photographs I wanted to create. In ID photos, the background is entirely blank. At the outset, I proposed to create a photograph for each student based on their descriptions of a real or imagined place, to envision this empty space as one that could be representative of their actual and three-dimensional identities. I sought to create a photograph that would be useful and meaningful to each student. On this website, each photograph is a portal. Clicking on the photo will lead you to excerpts of our letters that document and explicate the collaborative progression of the image. The student’s voice is most present through their written words. Although we met once in person, when I was able to attend Michael, Daniel, and Reginald’s graduation in October 2022, and once again over Zoom, our communication was primarily in the form of letters. Jason facilitated our exchanges by hand-delivering my printed text and their handwritten responses during a weekly study hall. Throughout this project, I questioned the value of photography, knowing that any recreation of a memory or ambition cannot satisfy the real. The resulting photographs are all fictions in some regard. By following the correspondence, you can trace the development of the image through the process of exchange, experiments, rabbit holes, failures, photo combinations, and post-production. Collaboration is both limitless and ambiguous. This ethos begins as an open process, that slowly must find its fuzzy borders of compromise and definition to come to a result. Our published exchanges lay bare the early ideations and possibilities as they crystallized into eight final photographs. These letters refuse the flattening of identity by personifying authorship and annotating intention. https://oliviamridge.com/This-City-Is-Always This City Is Always / Even When It Isn’t 2021-- This City is Always/ Even When It Isn’t traces the intersections of voyeurism, violence, and mythology across media landscapes, focusing on the experiences and representations of people in Chicago. In the late 19th Century, the New York City Police Department opened its collection of mugshots to the public, in the first Rogues' gallery. For the spectator of the criminal image, the Rogue’s Gallery served as a site to contemplate a “criminal type” and project their own imagination onto the subjects. In my current work, I draw upon connections between the voyeurism inherent in this looking and the obsession with watching fictional violence unfold on television, imagining the cop show as a contemporary Rogues’ gallery. Framing my investigations as detective work, I stalk the filming sets across Chicago. These productions impose a second, fictive city on the physical landscapes of Chicago, which is centered around criminological narratives. Expounding on the culture of compulsive binge-watching, I exaggerate the voyeurism of spectatorship to discover how cinematic fiction is created, how it imposes on reality, and is consumed by the public. This living document printed in 4 risograph inks looks toward the background, bringing into focus the stories and desires of people that lend their labor to plotlines.
